Aims, Ethos and Equality
We aim to ensure that all pupils achieve their maximum potential, academically, physically and socially, and we aim to, wherever possible prepare pupils for re-integration into mainstream education. We work towards these aims by offering pupils a secure and stimulating environment in which mutual respect, friendliness and an understanding of individual's needs is evident between all members of the Brent Knoll community.
Our community is made up of pupils, staff, governors, parents and members of the local community. We recognise the diversity of our community. We positively reflect our range of cultures and we offer everyone, regardless of race, disability, gender sexuality or class the opportunity to achieve happiness and success.
The staff are committed to working together with governors, parents and pupils to create a calm, peaceful learning environment, in which all pupils regardless of ability, race, gender or beliefs can maximise their potential. We recognise the need for all staff to be consistent in their approach towards encouraging good behaviour.
We aim to:
- Make all pupils responsible for their own behaviour.
- Provide positive support for those with more difficult behaviour.
We will:
- Treat all pupils with respect.
- Listen to pupils.
- Make pupils feel safe and welcome.
- Give pupils interesting and challenging work.
The school will take action to protect these rights and so taht these principles are upheld we have a Pupils' Forum. The Forum meets once a month to discuss matters of concern to the pupils. Each class in the Secondary Department has a representative on the Forum. The Class Representative brings the concerns of their class to the discussion. The Head chairs these meetings.
The School expects that Pupils will:
- Be polite and respectful to adults and each other.
- Refrain from name-calling or comments that make others unhappy.
- Try their best in all lessons.
- Behave in a sensible manner in class, around the school and on educational visits.
- Get to school and lessons on time and remain in class until they are told to leave.
- Not bring cigarettes, alcohol or any illegal substances into school.
- On entry to the school all parents and older pupils are asked to read, discuss and sign a home-school agreement.
Many pupils travel to school on buses provided by Lewisham Direct Team Passenger Services. However, pupils who live nearby make their own way to school and those in the Secondary Department are encouraged to obtain a bus pass so that they can travel independently to and from school. Pupls who live outside of Lewisham normally travel into Brent Knoll by mini cab arranged by theri LEA.
